Dive for Debris 2012

From the smallest bits of plastic, car batteries and appliances, to enormous fishing nets, "stuff" from our daily lives makes its way to the ocean by the ton every day. As Earths growing population consumes more disposable goods, the items we discard, even thousands of miles inland, are choking our ocean planet.

On Sunday 19th February we held DIVE FOR DEBRIS in partnership with Project AWARE.
Divers came and joined us on a clean up operation at one of our local diving sites, Manly Cove, inbetween Manly Wharf and Oceanworld.
As well as divers two representatives from The Two Hands project came down to help with cleaning up the beach and surrounding area.

In total 1140 individual items of rubbish were collected, heres just a snippet of those items -
82 plastic bags
29 balloons
238 food wrappers
10 plastic toys
and 1 condom!!

We would just like to say a massive thank you to everyone who came down and took part!
You were all part of a growing movement of scuba divers in 180 countries collecting and reporting the underwater trash you found! We all have to work together to protect and preserve our beautiful oceans!

Hello Everyone!

Sorry its been a while since our last blog! We've had lots going on and now you can read all about it!

Shark Conservation Course

Our first Shark Conservation Course ran without a glitch and everyone had a fantastic time!
It was so popular we have 3 of our Instructors training to be able to run the course, watch this space for the next available course.

Montague Island

We headed to Montague Island for a 3 night diving trip at the end of January and wow what a trip it was!

Diving with the Fur Seals is a once in a life time experience! Check out this amazing video taken by one of the divers!

Shouting out to all our Club Members!

Last Tuesday we had an information evening with David Roe from Project Aware all about Diving for Debris.

Dont be disappointed if you missed it you can still join us on the actual Dive Day which is being held on Sunday 19th February.

We will be diving and collecting debris at Manly Cove (between Manly Wharf and Ocean World). Meeting time is 10am at the dive shop, dive time is 11am.

The diving conditions the last few weeks has been very up and down, due to our very crazy summer weather we have been having. But even on the wet, grey days we have had some fantastic diving! Last Wednesday Mr Turtle even came to visit our divers down at Shelly Beach!

NEW Shark Conservation Course!!

Join us on our first ever SHARK CONSERVATION DIVER SPECIALITY COURSE on Saturday 14th January 2012!

The course gives an understanding of what actions you can personally take to protect Sharks.

You will learn insights in to Shark behavior and gain the knowledge to become an ambassador for Sharks.

The course runs from 9am to 5pm and costs $195. This includes-

*Student study guide

*Double boat dive to Magic Point to see the endangered Grey Nurse Sharks (weather permitting)

* Speciality certification which counts towards your goal as a recreational scuba diver:

*Special edition Project AWARE certification card.
*A donation of $20 to Project AWARE to support their Shark conservation efforts.

Dive Club Xmas Party and Beach BBQ Dive Day!

Our Club Christmas Party is being held on Friday 16th December at the fabulous Charlies Fireplace Bar at the Manly Pacific Hotel. We'll be there from 7pm onwards so come down and share a Christmas cheers with us!

If you cant make it to our Christmas Party then join us for our BBQ Beach Day at Little Manly on the 18th December!

Come for a dive, for some BBQ or for both! Meeting time at the dive shop is 10.30am for anyone who needs equipment hire then we'll head to Little Manly for 11.30am.

The sausage sizzle will start down at the beach from 1pm onwards. We'll put on the BBQ, bread, eskeys and ice, you just need to bring your snags and drinks. If you need transport we will be running the van down from the shop at the start and end of the day.

Important steps for Sharks!

David Roe from Project Aware informed us of some amazing steps for sharks which have been taken in the past week as a result of everyone's hard work during the Big Shark Shout Out Week!

Port Jackson Shark at Shelly Beach

On November 22nd the European Commission announced the long awaited proposal for closing the loopholes in the European Union's ban on shark finning and the European Union has become a signatory to the United Nations Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for Sharks.

These are important steps forward in the work to protect threatened and vulnerable shark species.

This beautiful little creature was found by Janet at Shelly Beach.

She spotted 3 of them on the big pipe down the left hand side by the big rocks towards Fair Bower.

There was also a Wobbegong hiding in the pipe!

The William Angliss Institute Opening Evening

Richard, Janet and Lynda attended the opening of the William Angliss Institute in Surrey Hills last night.

They offer a diploma of Resort Management (dive) where you learn all the skills to run a resort or dive operation anywhere in the world!

The training includes management, resort operations, scuba diving, hospitality and tourism.

Dive Centre Manly are proud to provide all the training to take the students through to becoming Dive Instructors!

We are excited about the new opportunities this will create for the younger generation and are thrilled to be apart of it.

Along with our brand new renovated shop, we are also extremely excited to announce that we are overhauling our dive club and it is now bigger & better!! Lovely Emily, our new shop manager, is also our club organiser and she has been working tirelsssly on the new look club. We have lots of social evenings and activities planned & we will be organising many Project AWARE events and activities. Our first event is a club members only shop reopening eveining where you can win an awesome Mike Ball Fly/Dive holiday just by being there. Day 4 of the build commences...

At the start of day 4 the shop is already starting to take shape!

Day 3 - Update

The guys have been doing an amazing job in the shop!

Jim said everything is all on track, no major hick ups
just yet!

The guys got quite excited when I turned up with Lamingtons,

but stuck up there all they could do was watch us eat them!

The Concrete Slab....Now you see it, now you dont!

The life of our concrete slab....

The concrete slab use to be enclosed behind the wall.
It looked after our oxygen cyclinders, regulators and
hire boots.

Unfortunately the concrete slab didnt fit in with our
plans for the new Dive Centre so we had to say goodbye -
with a jack hammer of course!

And now the concrete slab is just a memory!

Day 2 has begun!

Once again the builders have been in making a mess and then clearing it up again.

As i arrived this morning another new skip was being delivered to get filled up!

At the end of day 1 the builders had done an amazing job of clearing everything out leaving a blank canvass to build our new Dive Shop!

The boys are certainly making a mess!

A big apology to our neighbours for all the noise, it will be finished soon!

Dont forget guys even though the shop is closed we are still running business as usual

You would think moving a whole Dive Shop would be stressful.....

But oh no we still find the time to have some fun by

building a cardboard fort!

Dive Centre Manly will be closed from Monday 10th to Wednesday 19th for our facelift surgery and the moving has begun!

THERES SOMETHING HAPPENING AT DIVE CENTRE MANLY!

Our dive shop is in for a total overhaul and refit, we're shedding our skin and having a new facelift!

A brand new interactive area will replace our equipment

display. There will be tablets displaying information on all our fabulous products. You can sit and chat with our professional staff while going through informative and visual presentations.

Our art work inside and outside the shop is also being replaced with fantastic new graphics. We have a brand new logo which is colourful and fresh, so look out for our new eye catching banner which will be replacing our current blue one.

Being the busy dive shop we are our floor has taken a beating over time, but not any more! Our patchy floor is being replaced with a brand new one and it doesn't stop there. New walls, displays, storage and lighting are all included in our overhaul of Dive Centre Manly to make it look fresh and exciting!

As our facelift involves some serious building work the shop will be CLOSED from MONDAY 10TH OCTOBER and will re-open around WEDNESDAY 19TH OCTOBER.

But don't panic! It will still be business as usual. During the days we are closed we will be operating out of our Dive Training Centre, Unit D1, 1 Campbell Parade, Manly Vale. We will still be open everyday so if you need air fills, equipment servicing/hire etc...then just pop in at the above address. Our online store will of course be running as normal.

You can also still book onto courses, boat dives, shore dives and discover scuba diving experiences, just give the girls a call and they will be happy to help.
